Rosenior Takes Firm Stand as Fernandez Faces Two-Match Chelsea Suspension
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has been handed an internal suspension after making controversial comments about his future while on international duty.

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has issued a clear statement of authority by suspending midfielder Enzo Fernandez for two matches following the Argentine's controversial public comments about his future at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old Argentine international found himself in hot water after making a series of statements while on international duty that cast doubt over his commitment to the West London club. Speaking to media outlets in Buenos Aires, Fernandez expressed his admiration for former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos and suggested he would "love" to live in Madrid.

Rosenior, working alongside co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, moved swiftly to address what they termed "crossing a line." The suspension ruled Fernandez out of crucial fixtures against Port Vale in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the Premier League.

The decision represents the first major disciplinary test for Rosenior since taking charge at Chelsea in January following Enzo Maresca's departure. The English coach has emphasized the need to "protect the culture" at the club, particularly during a challenging period that has seen Chelsea suffer heavy defeats to PSG in the Champions League and Everton domestically.

The Fernandez situation was complicated by his agent, former PSG midfielder Javier Pastore, who publicly criticized the punishment as "completely unfair." Pastore has since attempted to clarify his client's comments, insisting Fernandez never explicitly stated he wanted to leave London or directly referenced Real Madrid.

However, sources close to the club suggest the midfielder remains interested in a potential move to the Spanish capital, despite Real Madrid's reluctance to meet Chelsea's asking price. The Blues are understood to be seeking at least the £107 million they paid Benfica for Fernandez in 2023, a fee that would represent a British transfer record.

The contrast between Fernandez's treatment and that of defender Marc Cucurella, who escaped sanction despite also making public comments about the club's transfer policy, highlights the club's nuanced approach to discipline. Cucurella was viewed as genuinely apologetic and reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea, while Fernandez's camp has continued to suggest their client "deserves much more than he is currently earning."

Chelsea's incentive-based contract structure, which includes bonuses tied to goals, assists, and Champions League qualification, has proven frustrating for some high-profile players locked into lengthy deals. Fernandez's contract runs until 2032, giving Chelsea significant leverage in any potential negotiations.

Rosenior has attempted to offer an olive branch, allowing Fernandez to continue training with the first team and maintaining his leadership role within the squad. "Enzo and I are in a very good place," the coach stated after the Port Vale match. "Things aren't what people maybe think they are."

The suspension comes at a particularly challenging time for Chelsea, who are also without captain Reece James through injury. This leaves Andrey Santos or Romeo Lavia likely to step into the midfield void for the crucial Manchester City encounter.

As Fernandez prepares for his return against Manchester United next weekend, the episode serves as a clear indication that Rosenior and Chelsea's hierarchy will not tolerate public dissent, regardless of a player's status or transfer value. The resolution of this situation may ultimately depend on whether Chelsea can satisfy Fernandez financially or find a suitable buyer willing to meet their valuation.

With senior players reportedly aware of the club's summer transfer plans and contract renewal discussions ongoing for several key figures, the Fernandez saga represents a crucial test of Rosenior's authority and Chelsea's commitment to maintaining squad discipline during a transitional period.
