Rory McIlroy Shoots Six Under to Share BMW Championship Lead
Rory McIlroy moved into a five-way share of the clubhouse lead at the BMW Championship after opening with a six-under-par round at Bellerive Country Club. BBC Sport reported that the world number two finished level with Americans Wyndham Clark, Chris Gotterup, JJ Spaun and Gary Woodland at the top of the first-round leaderboard. Five players therefore occupied the leading score.
Watch the highlights:
The round marked a sharp improvement for McIlroy after he finished 66th at the St Jude Championship the previous weekend. He reached the turn at two under par at Bellerive, then added a birdie at the 13th before making three more across the final four holes. That closing stretch lifted him into the leading group on six under.
McIlroy credited work with swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond for helping him move back in the right direction after the event in Memphis. He also said Bellerive was a more comfortable fit for his game, pointing to wider playing corridors and more room for error from the tee than he encountered at the St Jude Championship.
Japan's Ryo Hisatsune completed his round one stroke behind the leaders on five under. England's Alex Fitzpatrick, Sweden's Ludvig Aberg and American Michael Thorbjornsen were among the players tied for seventh at four under, while England's Matt Fitzpatrick was listed at three under.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre finished on two under after withdrawing before the second round of the St Jude Championship. BBC Sport noted that MacIntyre had opened that tournament with a 12-over-par 82, making his start at Bellerive a notable change in scoring.
World number one Scottie Scheffler endured a difficult opening stretch. The defending BMW Championship winner, who had won in Memphis on Sunday, made four bogeys within his first seven holes and fell well down the field during the early part of his round. With play still at the first-round stage, McIlroy's position represented a clubhouse lead rather than a completed tournament result.
