McIlroy Makes Masters History With Back-to-Back Augusta Victory
Rory McIlroy held off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke to become the first repeat Masters champion since Tiger Woods in 2001-02, claiming his sixth major title at Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy has done something not seen at Augusta National in nearly a quarter of a century. The Northern Irishman returned to the winner's circle at the Masters on Sunday, firing a final-round 71 to finish at 12-under par and claim a one-shot victory over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. In doing so, he became the first player to win back-to-back Masters titles since Tiger Woods accomplished the feat in 2001-02.

McIlroy led or co-led after every round of the tournament, a display of dominance that belied the drama of a final afternoon that saw the outcome in the balance until the very last putt dropped. He bogeyed the 18th hole but held on as Scheffler, despite a brilliant closing 68, fell just short.

The victory gives McIlroy six major championships, moving him level with Nick Faldo for the second-most by a European golfer, trailing only Harry Vardon, who holds the record with seven.

The American Scheffler made history of his own at Augusta, becoming the first golfer since World War II to play the final two rounds without a single bogey. He birdied the 18th to apply late pressure, but McIlroy had done enough.

Three-time runner-up Justin Rose entered the final nine with a two-shot advantage before four consecutive bogeys derailed his challenge. The 45-year-old Englishman finished tied for third at 10 under alongside Tyrrell Hatton, Russell Henley, and Cameron Young.

McIlroy, who turned 36 last month, took home the green jacket twelve months after finally conquering Augusta to complete the career Grand Slam. What once felt like an albatross around his neck has become a happy hunting ground in record time.

I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters and the grand slam, McIlroy said. And then this year, I realized it is just really difficult to win the Masters. I tried to convince myself it was both.

The win further solidifies McIlroy's place among golf's all-time greats and sets up what promises to be a compelling summer as he chases further major glory.
