Root Confirms Fleming Contact After England Rout Pakistan at Headingley
Joe Root said incoming England head coach Stephen Fleming was in daily contact during the first Test as England beat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley. Fleming is due to begin his role after the series.

England opened their Test series against Pakistan with an innings-and-103-run victory at Headingley, completing the match inside three days. The result gave Joe Root a commanding start to his latest spell as Test captain and extended England’s winning sequence at the Leeds ground.

Watch the highlights:

The Guardian reported that incoming head coach Stephen Fleming maintained daily contact with Root during the Test, even though he will not formally take up the position until after the Pakistan series. Root said Fleming had already shown strong investment in what England are trying to achieve, with the pair communicating throughout the week.

England’s bowlers supplied the foundation for the emphatic result. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took eight wickets each across the match as Pakistan struggled in both innings. Root praised the depth and balance of the attack, saying the bowlers may not yet appreciate how effective they can be together, particularly in conditions such as those at Headingley.

The batting lineup also received useful contributions from players returning to the side. Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence both made half-centuries. Root described Cox as calm and composed at number three, while Lawrence combined effectively with Harry Brook and played in his own manner.

According to The Guardian, the victory was England’s seventh consecutive Test win at Headingley, a sequence that began with another innings victory over Pakistan in 2018. England will not have an immediate opportunity to extend that run because the ground is not scheduled to stage men’s Test cricket in either 2027 or 2028. Root, for whom Headingley is his home venue, expressed disappointment at that absence from the schedule.

Pakistan now face uncertainty over Babar Azam before the second Test at Lord’s. Stand-in captain Salman Ali Agha said he hoped the injured batter would be fit and made clear he would be willing to return the captaincy to him. No confirmation of Babar’s availability was given, leaving his status unresolved as Pakistan prepare for the next match.
