Root Falls Four Short of Century in First Knock of Season for Yorkshire
Joe Root's highly anticipated return to County Championship cricket delivered almost everything fans hoped for, except for the defining milestone. The England Test star fell just four runs short of a century, dismissed for 96 as Yorkshire built a challenging total on day one of their Division Two encounter with Durham at Headingley. Root's composed knock came after Yorkshire were inserted to bat first in conditions that offered early movement for the Durham seamers. The 33-year-old looked in excellent touch throughout his 147-ball stay, showcasing the technique that has made him one of the world's premier red-ball batsmen. His innings included 13 boundaries and demonstrated the kind of solidity Yorkshire will need as they look to bounce back from a difficult start to the season. Root's departure, bowled by a delivery that held slightly less than expected, left Yorkshire at 287 for 5 with the lower order needing to consolidate. The Sheffield-born batsman had been building beautifully towards a big score, taking particular advantage of anything loose on the leg side. His partnership with Jordan Thompson, worth 78 runs, had steadied the ship after Yorkshire lost early wickets. "It's frustrating to get so close and not see it through," Root admitted after play. "I felt in good rhythm and was seeing it well, but that's cricket. The important thing is we have a competitive total on the board." Durham will be pleased to have removed him, with their bowlers working hard on a surface that offered initial assistance before flattening out. Yorkshire will look to their experienced campaigner to lead them to a substantial first-innings total when play resumes on day two.
