Ronaldo handed 30-day Portugal suspension after training-camp walkout
Cristiano Ronaldo received a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine after leaving Portugal's training camp in Denmark, with disciplinary documents showing how his punishment was reduced, the Guardian reported. The suspension falls in a period without international matches, while his future involvement with the national team remains uncertain.
Watch the highlights:
The ruling follows the 41-year-old's departure from the camp last month. According to the Guardian's account of the disciplinary findings, Ronaldo requested transport from the Portuguese Football Federation and travelled towards Copenhagen airport after head coach Jorge Jesus publicly reiterated that selection decisions were his responsibility and would not be influenced by players.
During the journey, Ronaldo telephoned federation president Pedro Proença and said he did not feel mentally able to remain with the squad. The ruling said he had not notified federation or national-team officials in advance of his intention to leave, or provided prior justification. It also recorded that he missed more than 30 team activities between 30 September and 4 October, including training, meals and travel.
Ronaldo had subsequently said on social media that the federation should punish him without mitigation, identifying his captaincy as a reason for greater accountability. During the inquiry, however, he sought a reduction based on his recent disciplinary record, his contribution to football and his assistance in establishing what had happened. His submissions cited club honours, Portugal's European Championship and Nations League successes, individual awards and state recognition.
According to the Guardian, the decision-makers accepted arguments relating to his achievements and service to his country, reducing both the suspension and fine by half. They then halved the sanctions again because he had accepted responsibility. The resulting punishment therefore reflected mitigating factors presented during the proceedings, despite the position he had taken in his earlier public statement.
The inquiry also criticised Ronaldo's announcement that he would later explain the reasons for leaving, concluding that it increased speculation surrounding the incident. Whether the Al-Nassr forward intends to return to international duty, and whether Jesus will select him again, remains unclear. Portugal's next scheduled match is against Denmark in Braga on 14 November.
