Ronaldo details eight-point agreement claim after leaving Portugal camp
Cristiano Ronaldo has published an account of his departure from Portugal's national team camp, alleging that coach Jorge Jesus failed to honour assurances about his playing time and a subsequent public explanation. In Tuesday's statement, reproduced by GOAL, the captain described an eight-point document that he said was intended to resolve their disagreement before the match against Denmark.
Watch the highlights:
Ronaldo said the original plan excluded him from the Norway and Denmark matches, but that Jesus later told him he would play for 30 minutes against Norway. He warmed up without being introduced. The forward said a later discussion led to an agreement about what the coach would tell reporters, but alleged that the public remarks differed from their private conversation.
Reporting by Brazilian outlet ge compared those proposed talking points with Jesus's press conference. The coach had publicly confirmed that a plan existed for Ronaldo to miss the two games. However, Jesus described any potential appearance from the bench as dependent on whether he needed the forward, rather than as an unconditional commitment to give him minutes.
The same review recorded Jesus acknowledging a mistake in the timing of Ronaldo's warm-up. The coach said he should have sent him to prepare about 15 minutes later. That admission concerned when the warm-up began, not an acceptance that Ronaldo necessarily had to play. Jesus also maintained that neither Ronaldo nor another player would determine his decisions about the team.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola's comparison of the statement and press conference identified further distinctions. Jesus rejected suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train, describing gym and strengthening work instead. But he did not deliver all the assurances about Ronaldo's standing and continued involvement that the player's proposed notes set out. The published accounts therefore show areas of agreement alongside the dispute over what had been promised.
Ronaldo also apologised to his teammates and supporters for leaving camp and said the Portuguese federation should assess and punish his conduct. He did not present the statement as a definitive international retirement. Instead, he said he would remain available to compete if fit and playing for his club, after any suspension. That was his stated position, not confirmation of a disciplinary decision or a return date.
