Olympic Cyclist Dennis Under Fire for Insensitive Social Media Post
Two-time Olympic medalist Rohan Dennis has ignited a firestorm of criticism after returning to social media with a post that many consider deeply insensitive, given the circumstances surrounding his wife Melissa Hoskins tragic death in December 2023.
The Australian cyclist, who had remained silent on social platforms since before the fatal incident, broke his social media hiatus this week by posting a photograph of a black Porsche with the caption What an absolute weapon. The post, accompanied by music from CID and Taylr Renee, has drawn widespread condemnation from victims rights advocates and the cycling community.
The timing and content of the post have proven particularly controversial given the circumstances of Hoskins death. The accomplished Olympic cyclist died after being struck by a vehicle driven by Dennis outside their Adelaide home. In May 2025, Dennis received a 17-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm.
Sarah Quick, South Australias commissioner for victims rights, issued a sharp rebuke of the social media post, describing it as deeply offensive. Quick stated that the post demonstrated a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused, adding that it reflects a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family.
The controversy deepened when Dennis appeared to mock media attention surrounding his posts. He shared a screenshot of a voice message from an Adelaide Advertiser journalist seeking comment, labeling the reporter and presumably other media members as rats. Additionally, he posted video footage of journalists gathered outside his Adelaide residence.
Attempting to address the backlash, Dennis later posted a photo of his two children riding bicycles, captioning the image Two absolute weapons with a heart emoji. However, this follow-up post failed to quell the criticism and may have further inflamed tensions given the parallel language used.
The legal proceedings revealed disturbing details about the incident that claimed Hoskins life. According to court testimony, Hoskins had jumped onto the bonnet of Dennis vehicle during what appeared to be a domestic dispute. Judge Ian Press noted that driving at any speed with a person on the bonnet constituted an inherently risky and dangerous act.
The situation escalated when Hoskins opened the car door after getting off the bonnet, which Dennis then closed without stopping the vehicle. Unbeknownst to Dennis, Hoskins had grabbed hold of the car as he accelerated down the street, ultimately falling and sustaining fatal injuries.
During sentencing, Judge Press acknowledged that Dennis demonstrated a sense of responsibility for the tragic events and had anguished over what could have been different. The judge emphasized that Dennis had not been charged with directly causing his wifes death, though he received a two-year good behavior bond and a five-year drivers license suspension.
Both Dennis and Hoskins had distinguished cycling careers representing Australia on the international stage. Dennis captured two world championships in road time trials and earned Olympic medals including silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 London Games and bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
Hoskins competed at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in track cycling events, specializing in the team pursuit. She was part of the Australian squad that claimed the 2015 world championship in the discipline, cementing her status as one of the countrys premier track cyclists.
The social media controversy has effectively undone any progress Dennis might have made in rebuilding his public image following the legal proceedings. By Thursday evening, facing mounting criticism and media scrutiny, Dennis appeared to have deleted his entire Instagram account.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how social media missteps can reignite public outrage and undermine efforts at rehabilitation, particularly in cases involving tragic circumstances and loss of life.
