Dennis Deletes Social Media After Victims Rights Official Condemns Post
Olympic champion Rohan Dennis has abruptly deleted his Instagram account after facing intense public backlash for a social media post that victims rights advocates condemned as deeply offensive and tone-deaf, given the tragic circumstances surrounding his wifes death.
The controversy erupted when Dennis, who received a suspended sentence last year after his car fatally struck wife Melissa Hoskins, posted a photograph of a black Porsche with the caption What an absolute weapon. The post, which included music from artists CID and Taylr Renee, sparked immediate outrage from both officials and the public.
Sarah Quick, South Australias commissioner for victims rights, delivered a scathing assessment of Dennis social media behavior. She described the post as deeply offensive and stated that it demonstrated a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused. Quick added that the post reflects a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family.
The timing of Dennis return to social media proved particularly problematic. After maintaining silence on platforms since shortly before the December 2023 tragedy, he had only recently resumed posting, beginning with a bicycle frame photograph on Tuesday before escalating to the controversial Porsche image.
Dennis appeared to recognize the growing media attention surrounding his posts, sharing a screenshot of a voice message from an Adelaide Advertiser journalist seeking comment. In his response, he dismissively referred to media personnel as rats, suggesting frustration with the scrutiny of his social media activity.
The situation deteriorated further when Dennis posted video footage showing reporters gathered outside his Adelaide residence, indicating that the story had generated significant media interest. His apparent attempt to deflect criticism by posting a photograph of his two children riding bicycles, captioned Two absolute weapons with a heart emoji, failed to quell the mounting criticism.
The tragic circumstances that led to this controversy remain deeply sensitive for all involved. During court proceedings, Judge Ian Press detailed how Melissa Hoskins had jumped onto the bonnet of Dennis vehicle during what appeared to be a domestic incident. The judge emphasized that driving at any speed with a person on the bonnet constituted an inherently risky and dangerous act.
Court testimony revealed that after Hoskins got off the bonnet, she opened the car door, which Dennis closed without stopping the vehicle. Unbeknownst to Dennis, his wife had grabbed hold of the car as he accelerated down the street, ultimately falling and sustaining fatal injuries.
Judge Press acknowledged during sentencing that Dennis demonstrated a sense of responsibility for the events and had anguished over what could have been different. However, the judge noted that Dennis stoic presentation did not necessarily indicate an absence of guilt regarding what happened.
Dennis legal consequences included a 17-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm, though he was not held criminally responsible for his wifes death. He also received a two-year good behavior bond worth $100 and a five-year driver license suspension.
Both Dennis and Hoskins had distinguished cycling careers representing Australia internationally. Dennis captured two world championships in road time trials and earned Olympic medals including silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 London Games and bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
Hoskins competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in track cycling events and was part of the Australian squad that won the 2015 world championship in team pursuit, establishing herself as one of the countrys premier track cyclists.
The complete deletion of Dennis Instagram account by Thursday evening suggests he recognized that his social media activity had created an untenable situation that required immediate action to prevent further damage to his already tarnished public image.
