Robertson criticises Scotland display after Slovenia overturn Hampden lead
Andy Robertson criticised Scotland's performance after a 2-1 home defeat by Slovenia in the Nations League on Tuesday, saying the team had failed to match the standards of their previous game. Speaking to BBC Sport Scotland, the captain said the visitors had shown greater energy and desire, leaving Scotland unable to build on Saturday's victory in North Macedonia.
Watch the highlights:
Ryan Christie put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute at Hampden Park, but Slovenia scored twice after half-time. According to the BBC's match coverage, Danijel Sturm supplied the pass for Aljosa Matko's 56th-minute equaliser. The two then exchanged roles for the winner in the 71st minute, with Matko delivering from the right for Sturm to finish past Angus Gunn.
The result left Scotland third in League B Group 1 with four points from four matches. Slovenia moved to seven points in second place, while Switzerland led the section with 12. Scotland have two group fixtures remaining in November: a home match against North Macedonia on November 13, followed by a trip to Switzerland on November 16.
Robertson said Scotland had entered the match encouraged by their previous performance but had not reproduced its positive features. He raised tiredness as a possible factor rather than a confirmed explanation, noting that Slovenia had played the same number of matches. His criticism focused on the team's competitiveness, not simply errors or differences in technical ability, according to the BBC's post-match reporting.
Head coach Sebastien Pocognoli also accepted that Scotland had not merited victory. He told BBC Sport Scotland that his players had made poor decisions in possession and had been insufficiently strong in individual contests. Pocognoli said the task was to learn from the defeat and improve in the next match, with his side still adjusting following his appointment as Steve Clarke's successor in August.
The evening also included a presentation recognising Robertson's 100th Scotland appearance, attended by former managers Gordon Strachan, Alex McLeish and Clarke. The on-field outcome left Pocognoli still seeking his first home win. Scotland's earlier home Nations League fixture under the Belgian had ended in a 3-0 loss to Switzerland.
