Robert MacIntyre Sets Sights on Masters Glory After Players Championship Heartbreak
Robert MacIntyre refuses to be downcast despite watching a potential Players Championship triumph slip through his fingers, instead channeling his near-miss into renewed confidence for major championship glory, starting with next month's Masters at Augusta National.
The 29-year-old Scotsman mounted one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent PGA Tour memory at TPC Sawgrass, erasing a 12-shot deficit after two rounds to contend for the title before ultimately falling short. His charge represents the closest anyone has come to overturning such a massive halfway gap on tour in more than two decades.
"I had a chance to win the Players. I am just gutted with the way it finished," MacIntyre reflected on his final-round stumble that began with a wayward approach shot at the 16th hole. The ball found thick rough, leading to a sequence that saw his third shot fly across the green and into water.
Despite the disappointing finish, MacIntyre's self-described "unanalytical" approach to the game continues to serve him well at golf's highest level. When asked to compare his methods with Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick, the humble Scot smiled: "I'm less analytical. I'm not the brightest guy but I know how to play golf, just shape balls."
That ball-shaping ability was on full display during his weekend surge at the Players Championship, where exceptional driving and what he describes as the best putting of his career nearly delivered a breakthrough victory. "For the last eight months, a year, my putting has been superb," MacIntyre explained. "So I knew I had a chance."
The performance validates MacIntyre's growing belief that major championship victories are within reach. Having finished second at last year's US Open, the left-hander from Oban has evolved from shinty-loving local hero to a golfer who thrives on the sport's biggest stages.
"This is what I want to do now," MacIntyre declared. "Winning the Scottish Open was my main goal in life apart from a major. Now, for me, it is about winning majors. With the way I am playing, the consistency and the level I know I can play at, I don't see why not. It actually gives me goosebumps thinking that I know I have a chance when I pitch up at any of them."
Augusta National holds particular significance for MacIntyre, who endured a disappointing missed cut in 2025 that still stings. "That was a sore one," he admitted, though he's characteristically reluctant to make excuses despite challenging circumstances that affected his playing partners as well.
His preparation for this year's Masters will be influenced by new responsibilities at home, where partner Shannon recently gave birth to their son in late January. The demands of new fatherhood weigh on MacIntyre's mind as he balances professional ambitions with family priorities.
"I feel bad that I am out here competing when Shannon is at home," MacIntyre confessed. "Everyone in the family is fully understanding. Shannon has been brilliant as have both sets of parents. We both have unbelievable support back home."
The domestic responsibilities include what MacIntyre playfully refers to as "changing nappies," though he insists fatherhood won't soften his competitive edge. "I am still volatile. It is part of my DNA, that fire," he explained. "I think when I finish on the course, it makes it easier. I FaceTime them and the wee man is screaming or drinking milk; he doesn't have a clue what I have just done."
That fire served him well during the Players Championship's final rounds, where even after his 16th-hole disaster, MacIntyre composed himself to create birdie opportunities on the notorious island-green 17th. His resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity suggest he possesses the mental fortitude required for major championship success.
As MacIntyre prepares for Augusta, he carries both the confidence from his weekend heroics and the hunger born from coming so close to breakthrough victory.
