Rob Cross Edges Beau Greaves 6-5 on Historic European Tour Debut
Rob Cross denied Beau Greaves a landmark victory by winning their first-round match 6-5 at the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest. Greaves was making her PDC European Tour debut and took the former world champion to a deciding leg before Cross advanced. BBC Sport reported the result and the match's decisive sequence on Friday.
Watch the highlights:
Cross won the opening leg, but Greaves responded to move 2-1 ahead. The players continued to trade legs in a closely contested match, and Greaves went 5-4 in front to move within one leg of victory. A win would have made her the first woman to claim a match on the European Tour, according to the BBC report.
The contest instead turned in the final two legs. Cross forced a decider, where Greaves required 70 to complete the win. She made two errors during that visit and Cross capitalized, taking the leg and the match by the narrowest available margin in the best-of-11 format.
Greaves, 22, had already made history before throwing a dart in Budapest. She qualified for the event by beating Tom Bissell in July, becoming the first woman to earn a place at a PDC European Tour tournament through qualifying. The Hungarian Darts Trophy is being staged from August 28 to 30 at the MVM Dome, with a 48-player field competing across three days.
The defeat does not erase the wider significance of Greaves' season. BBC Sport noted that she became the first woman to win a PDC ranking title in April, another milestone in her rise on the professional circuit. Her performance against Cross placed her one leg from adding a European Tour match win to that record, but the result remains a first-round exit.
Cross moves into the second round as the tournament continues on Saturday. The seeded players enter at that stage, while the event runs through Sunday's final. Greaves leaves Budapest without a win, but with a confirmed European Tour appearance and an 11-leg contest against an established former world champion on her debut.
