Is Rew a genuine England candidate? Somerset star knocking on Test match door
Somerset's Tom Rew has thrust himself into England Test reckoning with a series of outstanding performances that have caught the attention of national selector Luke Wright ahead of this summer's home series.
Watch the highlights:
The 24-year-old has been a revelation for Somerset this season, scoring 892 runs at an average of 55.75 in the County Championship, including three centuries and four fifties. His medium-fast bowling has also impressed, with 34 wickets at an average of 24.3, providing Somerset with a valuable all-round option that could prove attractive to England selectors.
"Tom has made significant strides this season," Somerset director of cricket Sue Str巩achan told reporters. "His temperament for Test cricket is evident in how he approaches big innings. He plays time correctly and has shown he can accelerate when needed."
Rew's emergence comes at an interesting time for England, with several spots in the batting order under scrutiny following inconsistent performances in the recent series against New Zealand. The middle order, particularly numbers five and six, has struggled for consistency, and Rew's composed approach could offer solutions to England's selection challenges.
The right-hander has credited his development to working with former England batsman John Morris, who has helped refine his technique against spin bowling. "I've worked hard on my off-side play and reading the turn," Rew explained. "Test cricket demands patience, and I feel I've developed that mindset."
His red-ball form has not gone unnoticed by the selection panel, with sources suggesting Rew is being actively monitored for potential inclusion in the England Lions squad touring the Caribbean later this year. A strong finish to the County Championship season could accelerate his path to the senior side, potentially challenging for a spot in time for the Ashes preparations.
"I'm focused on performing well for Somerset," Rew stated. "Whatever happens with England is a bonus. If the opportunity comes, I'll be ready to take it."
