Regulators Approve Pato-Backed Investment in Northampton Town
A consortium that includes former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato has cleared regulatory review for a proposed investment in Northampton Town. The size and structure of the stake remain undisclosed while final documentation is completed.

A consortium featuring former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato has received approval for a proposed shareholding acquisition in Northampton Town, according to BBC Sport. The League Two club said both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League had cleared the investment by Sports Alpha Capital, moving the transaction closer to completion.

The size of the proposed stake has not been disclosed. Northampton said full information about the investment, its structure and the principal investors would be released once the deal is completed. The club must still finish the remaining documentation, so the regulatory decisions represent a major step rather than confirmation that every part of the transaction has closed.

Pato is listed by Sports Alpha Capital as one of its investors, alongside London-based investment management firm Gemcorp Capital. The investment group had previously held discussions about a possible takeover of Colchester United earlier in 2026, but withdrew after initial talks. Northampton first confirmed discussions with what it described as a well-funded investment group in April.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said the review examined the proposed ownership structure, financial sustainability, and the suitability and financial standing of those involved. He said several investors had already visited Northampton, spent time at the club and attended matches. Thomas also pointed to the group’s mix of football, corporate and financial backgrounds, as well as its significant Brazilian representation.

The proposed investment arrives after a difficult period for Northampton. The Cobblers finished bottom of League One last season and were relegated to the fourth tier. BBC Sport reported that they remain without a win in the 2026-27 campaign. In April, the club announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3 million, while Thomas had previously said the planned investment would leave Northampton debt-free.

Northampton appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May and added 13 players during the summer transfer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City. Pato, 37, retired from playing in 2025 after a career that included 63 goals in 150 appearances for AC Milan and the 2010-11 Serie A title. For now, the club’s next ownership milestone is completion of the investment and publication of its full terms.
