Reece James undergoes knee surgery as Chelsea leave return date open
Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone knee surgery after being injured in training before his team's 5-1 victory over Bournemouth last weekend, BBC Sport reported. The 26-year-old is now working with the club's medical staff on his rehabilitation, with Chelsea yet to give a timetable for his return to action.
Watch the highlights:
The BBC report put his expected absence at three months, although manager Xabi Alonso did not commit to that recovery period. Alonso said the problem would keep James out for longer than two or three weeks and left open whether he would return before or after Christmas. He stressed that the recovery process needed to leave the player feeling right and in the best possible condition, rather than setting a firm deadline.
Alonso has moved James into a full-time midfield role and said the injury would not force Chelsea into the January transfer market. According to the BBC, the manager expects him back before January, while declining to provide a precise schedule. Alonso described the setback as disappointing for both the player and the club, but said the squad needed to be able to cope with injuries.
James has dealt with repeated injury problems over recent seasons and was among the players who withdrew from England duty during the latest international break. Alonso said Chelsea would continue to support their captain and keep him close to the team during his recovery. He also highlighted the influence James can have on the group even while unavailable for selection.
Levi Colwill has worn the captain's armband in Chelsea's last two Premier League matches, against Brentford and Bournemouth. Alonso said the squad had several players capable of taking responsibility, identifying Colwill and Moi among them. He emphasised that different personalities could fulfil the leadership role with the backing and respect of their teammates, rather than needing to replicate James' approach.
Chelsea next visit Everton before home league matches against Tottenham and Manchester United, with a Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool between those games. Alonso also confirmed that striker Emmanuel Emegha remains short of the fitness required to face Everton on Saturday. Emegha has yet to make his Chelsea debut, leaving the manager without another member of his squad as James begins his recovery.
