Rebecca Stokell begins voluntary suspension pending ICC investigation
Ireland cricketer Rebecca Stokell has accepted responsibility for a prescription-medication reporting error. She has begun a voluntary suspension while awaiting the outcome of an ICC investigation.

Ireland cricketer Rebecca Stokell has begun a voluntary suspension while awaiting the outcome of an International Cricket Council investigation into a prescription-medication reporting error, BBC Sport reported. The 26-year-old has accepted responsibility for failing to meet the reporting requirements and said she hopes to return to playing for Ireland as soon as possible.

Watch the highlights:

The ICC confirmed that Stokell returned an adverse finding for a specified substance after being drug tested following Ireland's defeat by Sri Lanka at the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup in June. BBC Sport reported that the substance was not performance-enhancing. The case concerns her failure to comply with requirements for reporting the use of prescription medication.

In a statement carried by the BBC, Stokell described the breach as inadvertent but acknowledged that following the anti-doping guidelines was her responsibility. She said she had voluntarily stepped away before the findings were returned. Her statement distinguished the medication issue from any performance-related purpose, while accepting that she had made a mistake in meeting the requirements that applied to her.

The suspension is voluntary, and the investigation's outcome remains pending. Stokell's acceptance of responsibility therefore comes ahead of the ICC's findings, rather than alongside an announced final decision. The BBC report did not identify the medication or specify how long her absence would last. It also gave no date for a decision or for her potential return to international cricket.

Cricket Ireland's director of high performance, Graeme West, said the organisation had provided support appropriate to the circumstances. He also stressed that anti-doping rules exist to protect athletes as well as the sport, and that international players must meet the standards and responsibilities expected of them. West said Cricket Ireland would continue regularly educating its players about those obligations and their importance.

Stokell made her international debut in 2017 and has represented Ireland 109 times across all formats, according to the BBC. For now, her stated wish to resume playing remains dependent on a process whose outcome has not yet been announced.
