Rayo Vallecano return to Vallecas ends in abandonment after fan protest
Rayo Vallecano's goalless match against Athletic Club was abandoned after supporters twice threw objects onto the pitch. The protest against owner Raul Martin Presa came during the club's first home game of the season at Vallecas.

Rayo Vallecano's first match of the season at the Estadio de Vallecas ended without a result on Saturday after a supporters' protest forced their La Liga meeting with Athletic Club to be abandoned. According to BBC Sport, fans threw paper planes and small rubber balls onto the playing surface to protest against owner and president Raul Martin Presa. The game was goalless when play was abandoned.

Watch the highlights:

The initial interruption came in the 13th minute, the point in matches when Rayo supporters traditionally call for Presa to leave. The referee halted the game while stewards cleared the objects from the grass. An announcement over the stadium's public-address system also asked spectators to stop throwing items onto the field.

Play restarted after a 15-minute delay, but the resumption did not last. Supporters in the south stand threw more objects onto the pitch, prompting the referee to abandon the fixture. Athletic subsequently said it would get in touch with supporters who had travelled to Madrid for the match to organise refunds, BBC Sport reported.

The protest took place against a backdrop of concerns about conditions at Vallecas. The stadium had been temporarily shut following an audit that identified serious health and safety problems, including a risk of Legionnaires' disease. BBC Sport reported that supporters hold Presa responsible for the state of the facilities and have long criticised both their maintenance and the lack of modernisation at the club.

Complaints about Rayo's facilities also came from the squad last season. The Spanish football association published a letter from the players raising concerns about the pitch, the absence of hot water in showers and insufficient cleaning. Mould had also prevented the team from using its training ground at the beginning of that campaign. Despite those difficulties, Rayo reached the Conference League final, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace.

Ticket access is another longstanding issue highlighted in the BBC report. Rayo remain the only club in Spain's top division without an online ticketing system, leaving supporters regularly facing hours of queues at the stadium's small ticket office. On the field, the team stood 13th in La Liga with two wins from seven games before a return to Vallecas that was cut short by renewed protests.
