Rangers and Hearts exit Women's Europa Cup after second-leg defeats
Scotland's remaining hopes in the Women's Europa Cup ended as Rangers and Heart of Midlothian were eliminated following second-leg defeats. BBC Sport reported that Hammarby won 3-0 at Broadwood Stadium to complete a 5-0 aggregate victory, while Real Sociedad beat Hearts 4-0 after a goalless first meeting in Edinburgh.
Watch the highlights:
Rangers faced last season's finalists with a deficit already to overturn, and Hammarby increased it after 13 minutes. Mathilde Janzen's pass released Anna Walter, who finished past Jenna Fife. The visitors, second in Sweden's top flight, also created close-range opportunities for Ida Hermannsdottir and Elin Sorum before the interval, but neither converted.
Laura Berry supplied Rangers' main attempts to respond, shooting straight at Cajsa Andersson in the 21st and 58th minutes. Despite having possession, the Scottish Women's Premier League leaders could not turn those openings into a goal. Hermannsdottir then scored two minutes after Berry's second effort, extending Hammarby's advantage on the night.
Fanny Peterson completed the scoring after Fife parried Svea Rehnberg's close-range attempt. The 16-year-old midfielder had also scored in the first leg. Her latest goal confirmed a second victory in the tie for Hammarby, who had finished runners-up in the Swedish league last season.
Hearts' exit came earlier in the evening in San Sebastian, where their second qualifying round contest had begun level on aggregate. Real Sociedad took the lead in the 18th minute when Laura Camino headed Ainhoa Marin's cross into the far side of the goal from 12 yards. The Scottish champions offered little attacking threat in response.
The home side added two more goals before half-time. Erin Rennie's foul on Intza Egiguren brought a penalty, which Paula Fernandez converted five minutes before the break. Four minutes later, Ainoa Campo finished from close range after Cecilia Marcos delivered a low cross, leaving Hearts three goals behind at the interval.
Heavy rain slowed Sociedad after the restart. Lauren Wade registered Hearts' first effort on goal with a 55th-minute free-kick, but sent it straight at the goalkeeper. Marin scored the hosts' fourth in the 76th minute, completing the victory and confirming Hearts' elimination alongside Rangers from Europe's second-tier women's competition.
