Rangers close gap on Celtic as Hibernian beat Aberdeen 4-0
Rangers cut Celtic's lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to one point with a 2-0 victory at St Mirren on Saturday. Ryan Naderi and Dan Neil scored for Derek McInnes's side, according to the Press Association report published by the Guardian. The result extended Rangers' unbeaten sequence across all competitions to 12 matches.
Watch the highlights:
Naderi converted an 18th-minute penalty before captain Neil, returning to the side, scored with a deflected effort shortly after the hour. Rangers had drawn their previous two away league fixtures against Dundee and Hearts. Their win in Paisley brought them within a point of Celtic with both clubs having played the same number of games, though Celtic could restore a four-point advantage by beating Kilmarnock on Sunday.
At Pittodrie, Hibernian's 4-0 win moved them above Aberdeen into 10th place on goal difference. The visitors had begun the evening three points behind their opponents. Aberdeen threatened early, with Jack Milne denied by goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger and also hitting the crossbar, but Jamie McGrath scored from 25 yards to put Hibernian ahead. Callum Wright added a second as Aberdeen pursued an equaliser, before Thibault Klidjé and Nicky Cadden completed the scoring.
Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson described the performance and result as unacceptable, the report said. He acknowledged that his side had failed to convert their opportunities and said he would continue fighting to improve their situation. The defeat left Aberdeen behind Hibernian as the clubs headed into the international break, with home supporters calling for Robinson's dismissal during the match.
Dundee United drew 1-1 with Motherwell at Tannadice after a disputed penalty decision. Referee Ryan Lee initially awarded an offside free-kick, but a video review of Dylan Tait's challenge on Tawanda Maswanhise led to a penalty instead. Lukas Fadinger converted before Jesse Randall equalised. United manager Jim Goodwin criticised the decision, while Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson supported it.
St Johnstone beat Dundee 2-1, with Kai Fotheringham scoring a deflected winner in the 72nd minute on his first Premiership start for the club. Josh Campbell had headed the hosts in front after five minutes. Substitute Joe Westley equalised early in the second half following a misunderstanding between goalkeeper Ross Sinclair and Cheick Diabate, before Fotheringham settled the match.
