Randell and Bashir Put Derbyshire on Top in Rain-Hit Bristol Opener

BBC Sport, carrying a report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said Derbyshire seized control of their County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire despite rain wiping out most of the opening day in Bristol. Gloucestershire reached only 62-5 after choosing to bat, while Derbyshire had not begun their first innings when play ended.

The weather delayed the start until 13:45 BST and cost the match 65 overs in total. Gloucestershire, who entered the fixture at the bottom of the table, were soon in difficulty on a drying surface. Their recent first-innings totals had been 137 and 150, and the latest collapse left them 37-5 before a partial recovery.

Brett Randell made the initial breakthrough when captain Cameron Bancroft edged to Martin Andersson at second slip. Ben Aitchison then bowled Ollie Price for a 14-ball duck, before Joe Phillips, who had been dropped twice in the slips, edged Randell to Aitchison at second slip for 10. Gloucestershire were 20-3 at that stage.

Derbyshire introduced Shoaib Bashir in the 14th over after selecting three seamers. The England off-spinner struck in consecutive overs, dismissing Miles Hammond and Tommy Boorman lbw as both batters played back. Bashir closed with figures of 2-14, while Randell had 2-11 and Aitchison 1-23.

James Bracey provided Gloucestershire's resistance and was unbeaten on 25 at the close. Ed Middleton supported him with eight not out from 39 balls, and the pair took the total to 62-5 by tea. Rain returned at that point, and umpires Naeem Ashraf and Paul Pollard ended play early at 16:45 BST without another ball being bowled.

The unfinished sixth-wicket stand gives Gloucestershire something to build on when play resumes, but Derbyshire hold the stronger position after a disciplined bowling display. The first day's points allocation was one point to Derbyshire and none to Gloucestershire, with the visitors still waiting to bat in the four-day contest.
