Rain Denies Hampshire Victory Push Against Glamorgan in Cardiff

Hampshire's bid for a vital County Championship victory was stopped by rain after they reduced Glamorgan to 21-3 in pursuit of 302 at Sophia Gardens. BBC Sport reported that a mid-afternoon downpour ended play on the fourth day, leaving the Division One match drawn and both teams with 11 points.

Hampshire began the final morning on 124-2 in their second innings and declared at lunch on 300-8. Toby Albert led the scoring with 64, while Andrew Neal accelerated the innings with 47 from 20 balls. Neal hit four sixes and four fours before Mason Crane dismissed him, prompting captain Ben Brown to declare.

Glamorgan off-spinner Ben Kellaway took 4-78 as Hampshire pursued quick runs. Jake Lehmann made 36 before Zain Ul Hassan bowled him and then left the field with a groin problem. Kellaway removed Albert at deep mid-wicket and caught Brown off his own bowling as the visitors built a lead large enough to set an imposing target.

Hampshire's bowlers immediately strengthened their position after lunch. Kyle Abbott trapped Asa Tribe leg before with the third ball of the innings, giving Tribe a pair in the match. Eddie Jack then had emergency opener Crane caught at third slip, and Abbott bowled Kiran Carlson to leave Glamorgan 14-3. Kellaway and Colin Ingram moved the total to 21 without further damage.

The umpires took the players off for bad light at 2:47 p.m. local time, moments before heavy rain arrived. BBC Sport reported that water accumulated on the covers and prevented any resumption. Only just under two days of play had been possible across the scheduled four days, and Hampshire had to settle for a draw despite controlling much of the contest.

The outcome left Hampshire 16 points adrift at the bottom of Division One after Surrey held on for a draw against Essex. Glamorgan remained in a congested middle section of the table after another difficult batting display against one of the division's bottom teams. Abbott finished the match with figures of 5-40 and reached 49 Championship wickets for the season. Glamorgan are scheduled to visit Somerset on Wednesday, September 2, while Hampshire host Warwickshire after the short turnaround.
