Rain denies Glamorgan victory as Essex finish 25 runs behind in Cardiff draw

Glamorgan's attempt to turn a commanding first-innings advantage into victory over Essex ended in a rain-affected draw at Sophia Gardens. According to BBC Sport Wales, only 21 balls were possible on the final day of the County Championship match in Cardiff. Essex finished their second innings on 351-6, still 25 runs short of making Glamorgan bat again after being asked to follow on.

The result brought Glamorgan 13 points and Essex nine. Glamorgan ended the campaign sixth in Division One, retaining the top-flight place they had earned through promotion in 2025. Essex finished eighth, with the BBC reporting that their position benefited from Leicestershire's points deduction following the August match against Glamorgan. The draw therefore concluded a match in which Essex had spent their second innings trying to repair a substantial deficit.

Glamorgan had made 505 in their only innings, built around Tribe's 184 and Carlson's 107. Root contributed 59, while Essex bowler Akhter returned 5-107. Those contributions gave the hosts a total Essex could not approach at the first attempt, despite subsequently putting together a much stronger response while following on.

Essex were dismissed for 129 in their first innings, leaving a deficit of 376. Ul Hassan took 5-14 and Ray Toole added 3-21. In the second innings, Dean Elgar's 108 and Tom Westley's 65 helped Essex reach the final day on 331-5, with George Bell still at the crease and five wickets remaining.

Play eventually began at 13:00 BST after a delayed start. Essex scored 14 from Timm van der Gugten's opening over, and Noah Thain hit Toole's first delivery for six. Bell then fell lbw to Van der Gugten for 66, having recorded a half-century in each of his three matches on loan from Lancashire. Essex added 20 runs overall in the brief passage of play.

Simon Harmer faced just one delivery before rain interrupted again. Umpires Alex Wharf and Mike Burns subsequently abandoned play, ending Glamorgan's opportunity to take the remaining wickets. Essex's recovery had not erased the first-innings gap, but the weather ensured the hosts could not convert that advantage into a win.
