Raiders select Mendoza as No 1 pick | 'I'm ecstatic'
The Las Vegas Raiders entered the 2026 NFL Draft with the first overall pick and did not hesitate, selecting quarterback Alejandro Mendoza from the University of Texas in a decision that sent shockwaves through the league.
Watch the highlights:
Mendoza, a 21-year-old dual-threat quarterback, impressed scouts throughout the pre-draft process with his exceptional arm talent, mobility, and football IQ. The Texas product threw for 4,512 yards and 42 touchdowns last season while adding 892 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground.
"I'm ecstatic," Mendoza said in his first interview as a Raider. "This is a dream come true. I've worked my entire life for this moment, and to have it happen with the Raiders is incredible. I'm ready to get to work and help this franchise win."
The selection marks a significant shift in direction for the Raiders, who finished last season with a 4-13 record. Head coach Antonio Pierce expressed confidence in the young quarterback's ability to transform the offense.
"Alejandro brings everything we're looking for," Pierce said. "His leadership qualities, his competitive nature, and his talent level are exactly what we need to build around. We're excited to develop him and see what he can do."
Mendoza becomes the first Texas quarterback selected first overall since Sam Ehlinger in 2021. The Raiders will likely look to build their offense around their new franchise quarterback through the remainder of the draft, with several needs still to address on both lines of scrimmage.
