Raheem Sterling Charged After M3 Motorway Crash

Former England forward Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen after a motorway crash in May. The Guardian reported the charges on Wednesday, citing Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

Police said the case followed a single-vehicle collision involving a Lamborghini on the southbound M3 near the Minley interchange on 28 May. According to the force, no other vehicles were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported. Sterling is accused of the three offences; the charges have not been adjudicated.

The 31-year-old, who is from Berkshire, is scheduled to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on 15 September. The police statement and the court appearance are the confirmed next steps in the case, with no further details about the circumstances of the collision provided in the report.

Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 senior appearances for England. He was part of the team that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and later advanced to the Euro 2020 final under Gareth Southgate. Those tournaments formed part of an international career in which he became a regular attacking option for England.

At club level, Sterling developed in Queens Park Rangers' academy before making his senior debut for Liverpool. He moved to Manchester City in 2015 and won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup with the club. Sterling joined Chelsea in 2022, then spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge.

After leaving Chelsea, Sterling joined Feyenoord in the Netherlands on a short-term agreement that ran until the end of last season. He is currently without a club, The Guardian reported. Sterling was made an MBE in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to racial equality in sport, following his public work and campaigning against racism and discrimination.
