Raffi Quirke Targets England Return After Newcastle Red Bulls Move

Raffi Quirke has set his sights on returning to the England squad after joining Newcastle Red Bulls from Sale Sharks as part of a major overhaul at Kingston Park. The 25-year-old scrum-half is one of 25 new arrivals recruited under the club's Red Bull ownership before the new season, BBC Sport reported.

Quirke spent a decade in Sale's system after joining the club at 15. He told the BBC's Rugby Union Weekly podcast that leaving his boyhood team, school friends and family behind was one of the hardest decisions he had made, but said he felt his career had reached a point where he needed a fresh chapter outside his comfort zone.

The move places Quirke inside a Newcastle rebuild after the team finished bottom of the table in each of the past four seasons. He said the changes extend beyond the playing squad, with new coaches, revamped changing rooms and greater accountability in training and feedback. Existing players have also told him the fitness work and overall demands have increased.

Bringing 25 newcomers together presents an immediate integration challenge. According to Quirke, the group includes players who have arrived from New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland, along with recruits who have played in France. He said the squad must quickly develop a shared understanding on and off the field because many of the players have not previously worked together.

Newcastle used a pre-season trip to Austria to help accelerate that process. Quirke said the time away allowed the squad to socialise and build relationships without players returning to their families after training. He contrasted that experience with his long spell at Sale, where years spent alongside the same teammates meant their habits were already familiar.

Quirke also said Newcastle's coaches and senior figures want him competing for England selection and pushing his limits. Injuries and fluctuating selection have interrupted his international ambitions at important stages, according to the scrum-half, and he hopes the transfer provides a reset. His stated priority is to play regularly enough to force his way back into the England setup.
