Punjab Kings Dominate Mumbai Indians in Seven-Wicket Victory to Clinch Playoff Spot
Punjab Kings secured a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, moving within striking distance of the top four in the IPL standings with a clinical all-round performance.

Punjab Kings delivered a commanding all-round display to defeat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 16, 2026, in a match that solidified their push toward IPL playoff qualification.

Watch the highlights:

Chasing a competitive target of 178, Punjab Kings got off to a steady start with openers Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shikhar Dhawan building a 52-run partnership in the first seven overs. Dhawan contributed 31 before being trapped leg before by Jasprit Bumrah, but his departure didn't slow the visitors' momentum as Riyan Parvatia entered the crease and immediately shifted gears.

Parvatia played the innings of the match, showcasing aggressive stroke-making that included three towering sixes over mid-wicket and a series of elegant drives through the covers. He finished 67 not out off 42 balls, anchoring the chase with composure under pressure. Supporting him was Jitesh Sharma, who provided valuable late-order stability with an unbeaten 29 from 18 deliveries.

Mumbai Indians' bowlers struggled to contain the partnerships, with Bumrah finishing as their most economical bowler at 7.20 runs per over while claiming one wicket. Hardik Pandya's medium pace proved expensive, conceding 52 runs in his four overs, and the absence of injured spinner Rahul Chahar left a significant void in their bowling attack.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians had posted 177-5 after being sent in to bat first, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the recovery with a composed 74. After losing early wickets, Yadav rebuilt the innings through intelligent shot selection, finding gaps with precision before falling to Sam Curran's medium pace in the 17th over. Tim David added a quickfire 32 not out at the death to push the total past 170.

Punjab Kings' bowlers deserve credit for the disciplined performance that restricted MI below 180. Curran claimed 2-31, while young spinner Harpreet Brar returned figures of 2-24 from his four overs, creating pressure in the middle overs that stifled the home side's scoring rate.

The victory moves Punjab Kings to 14 points from 11 matches, putting them in a strong position to secure a top-four finish with six games remaining. "The boys showed great character today," said Dhawan in the post-match presentation. "We stuck to our plans and executed them well. This win gives us huge confidence heading into the business end of the tournament."

Mumbai Indians remain in seventh place with 10 points and face an uphill battle to qualify, with their next match against Chennai Super Kings scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.
