PSG beat Manchester City 4-2 despite Haaland double
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday after establishing a three-goal lead before half-time. Erling Haaland scored twice for the hosts, but their improvement after the interval was not enough to overturn the deficit against the defending Champions League winners, according to BBC Sport's coverage.
Watch the highlights:
Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha scored PSG's first-half goals, leaving Enzo Maresca's side with a substantial recovery job. The Guardian reported that the opening two goals came just 75 seconds apart. City's defeat followed a 3-0 league victory at Liverpool, a sharp change in results across their two matches.
Maresca responded with three substitutions at the break. Matheus Nunes replaced Ruben Dias, Ayyoub Bouaddi came on for Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye took over from Jeremy Doku, BBC Sport's match coverage recorded. Ndiaye went on to create a goal for Haaland, while City began generating opportunities that had been lacking during their difficult opening half.
The hosts also threatened through Josko Gvardiol and Enzo Fernandez. Gvardiol had a header cleared off the line, while Fernandez missed a headed opportunity and later hit the woodwork. Haaland's two goals gave City a route back into the contest, but the visitors' first-half advantage left little margin for further defensive mistakes.
Maghnes Akliouche supplied PSG's fourth goal after Gianluigi Donnarumma got a hand to his effort but could not prevent the ball dropping behind him into the net. The City goalkeeper also saved a penalty during a match in which he faced his former club. Those incidents helped define a second half that brought goals for both teams without changing the eventual winner.
PSG are pursuing a third consecutive Champions League title under Luis Enrique. BBC Sport reported that they beat Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final and defeated Arsenal on penalties in the following season's final. Their victory in Manchester adds another result to that campaign, while City's response after the break could not undo the damage inflicted before half-time.
