PSG confirm Kvaratskhelia ACL surgery after Barcelona win
Paris St-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during Tuesday’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona, BBC Sport reported. PSG have not announced a timetable for his return. The club also confirmed that Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos will be unavailable for a few weeks following injuries in the same match.
Watch the highlights:
Kvaratskhelia was hurt in a challenge with Barcelona’s Xavi Espart and could not put weight on his right leg when he was substituted in the 59th minute. The Georgia international was making his first Champions League start of the season. His appearance against Barcelona was part of a campaign in which he has played 11 times for PSG, according to the BBC report.
In an Instagram statement reported by BBC Sport, the 25-year-old described the emotional impact of the injury and his determination to recover. He said he had prepared exceptionally thoroughly for the match and now faced months of difficult work. He also expressed a desire to return stronger for the people supporting him. His comments outlined his personal response to the setback, but did not provide a confirmed date for a return to action.
The injury interrupts a PSG career that began with his move from Napoli in January 2025. Since joining the French club, Kvaratskhelia has helped them secure successive Champions League titles. Tuesday’s match came during their defence of the trophy, with the winger forced off before PSG secured the result through two late goals at Parc des Princes.
Dembele and Marquinhos add to the club’s injury concerns. Dembele left the match with a problem in his left thigh, while Marquinhos injured his right thigh. PSG’s indication that both will miss a few weeks is separate from Kvaratskhelia’s situation: no equivalent recovery window has been given for the winger, whose next confirmed step is knee surgery.
PSG and Barcelona were tied at 2-2 going into the final 10 minutes before the hosts scored twice. The victory kept PSG’s winning start to the Champions League intact. They lead the table with three victories from three matches, although the result was accompanied by confirmed injury setbacks for all three players.
