Price and Clayton advance to all-Welsh World Grand Prix quarter-final
Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton secured an all-Welsh quarter-final at the World Grand Prix in Leicester after winning their second-round matches. BBC Sport reported that the two former champions will meet on Friday, with Price still yet to concede a set in this year's tournament and Clayton pursuing a second title.
Watch the highlights:
Price beat Ross Smith in straight sets, reversing the outcome of their World Series final earlier in September. The former world champion was measured about his performance afterwards, acknowledging that the match had not been especially impressive but emphasising the importance of remaining in the competition. He also recalled a heavy defeat by Clayton in a previous final of this event.
Clayton overcame Wessel Nijman 3-1, averaging 93 and hitting eight 180s, according to BBC Sport. He would replace Price as the leading Welsh player if he wins the trophy on Sunday. Clayton described the pair as good friends and spoke about their light-hearted exchanges whenever Price regains the Welsh number-one position.
Darts World reported that Price's 3-0 victory at the Mattioli Arena included an average above 90 and just four legs conceded to Smith. Clayton, meanwhile, registered four finishes of more than 100 as he followed up his opening-round victory over Krzysztof Ratajski. Nijman took the second set, but Clayton won the third and fourth to complete his progress.
Nathan Aspinall joined them in the last eight with a 3-0 win over Luke Woodhouse, who had eliminated Luke Littler in the first round. Aspinall averaged above 96, struck eight maximums and completed the match with a 106 checkout, Darts World reported. Afterwards, he said his starting doubles had improved and expressed satisfaction with his scoring during the victory.
Aspinall's next opponent will be Ryan Joyce, who also advanced without dropping a set, beating Danny Noppert 3-0. Joyce, a semi-finalist in 2024, took each set by three legs to one. Those results settled the first four quarter-final places on Wednesday, with the remaining second-round matches scheduled for Thursday evening.
