Preston sign Greg Docherty on deal through end of season
Preston North End have signed midfielder Greg Docherty until the end of the 2026-27 season following a successful trial. The Lancashire Evening Post reported that the 30-year-old free agent has been given the number five shirt and completed the move in time to be eligible for Saturday’s home match against Southampton.

The agreement gives Graham Alexander another midfield option as he seeks to improve Preston’s position at the bottom of the Championship. According to the newspaper’s report on the signing, Alexander remained without a victory after six matches in charge. Docherty’s arrival also comes with Leo Leroy suspended following his fifth booking of the season.
Alexander’s assessment included a 62-minute appearance for Preston’s under-21 side on Monday and fitness testing. He praised Docherty’s condition but cautioned that readiness to contribute was different from being able to play full matches every few days. The manager also highlighted the midfielder’s experience of captaincy and promotion, along with his motivation and quick integration into the squad.
In a separate report on Docherty’s first club interview, the Lancashire Evening Post detailed how he had maintained his fitness after leaving Charlton Athletic. Docherty said the departure had been unexpected and that he worked individually with a coach while looking for another club. Those sessions allowed him to maintain a routine and concentrate on areas that were harder to address in group training.
Docherty described helping his new team-mates as his immediate priority. Having captained Charlton for two years, he believes his leadership experience and playing ability can contribute to the group. He also said the welcome he received around Preston during his spell training with the club had been positive, with people encouraging him to complete the move.
The midfielder identified conversations with Alexander, the club’s values and its location as factors in his decision. Preston brings him closer to his native Scotland and family in northern England. He said he felt ready to play, although eligibility for the Southampton fixture does not itself confirm that he will make his debut.
