Argentine footballer Juan Marco Prestianni has been handed a six-match ban by UEFA after being found guilty of discriminatory conduct towards Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr during a Champions League match between their clubs earlier this month.

Watch the highlights:

The incident occurred during the second leg of a quarterfinal tie, where footage showed Prestianni directing abusive language towards the Brazilian forward. UEFA's disciplinary committee reviewed the evidence and determined that the comments constituted discriminatory abuse.

"The committee found clear evidence of discriminatory language targeting a player based on his race," UEFA stated in their official ruling. "Such behavior has no place in football and undermines the integrity of the sport."

The ban means Prestianni will miss the remainder of his club's European campaign, as well as the first several matches of their domestic season. Additionally, the player and his club have been fined a combined amount reported to be in the region of €50,000.

Vinicius Jr, who has been vocal about his experiences with racism throughout his career, welcomed the decision. "I hope this sends a clear message that discrimination will not be tolerated," he wrote on social media. "Every player deserves to perform without fear of abuse."

The ban is the latest in a series of recent disciplinary actions taken by European football authorities against discriminatory behavior. Last month, UEFA introduced stricter protocols for dealing with abuse, including the possibility of stadium closures for clubs whose fans are found guilty of discriminatory conduct.

Prestianni's club has accepted the ruling and issued a statement condemning his actions, adding that they will use this as an educational opportunity for their entire squad. The player's representatives have not confirmed whether they plan to appeal the decision.
