Premier League Summer Transfer Spending Hits Record £3.198bn

Premier League clubs have set a summer transfer spending record for the second consecutive year, with the combined outlay reaching £3.198bn. BBC Sport reported the total on Tuesday, citing figures supplied by Paul Macdonald, the founder of FootballTransfers.com. The new mark exceeds the £3.14bn spent in the summer window 12 months earlier.

The record fell during the final day of trading as Manchester City completed a deal for Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye. BBC Sport said the initial £60m fee took the league's collective spending beyond the previous high. The scale of the increase is especially clear over a longer period: Premier League clubs spent £1.13bn in the corresponding window five years ago.

Several of the summer's largest deals involved players moving between English clubs. Chelsea paid £117m to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while Manchester City spent £116m on Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. According to the BBC report, those are the two highest fees paid for British players. Liverpool also paid Paris St-Germain an initial £106m for France forward Bradley Barcola, with the deal potentially rising to £123m.

Tottenham broke their club transfer record to recruit Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in a deal that could reach £100m. Spurs also added Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m and Savio from Manchester City for £75m, potentially rising to £85m. Elsewhere, City paid £85.6m for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, Arsenal signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75m, and Manchester United bought Carlos Baleba from Brighton for £70m.

The concentration of spending within England was another feature of the window. BBC Sport said 38% of transfers involving a fee were between Premier League clubs, up from 30% last year. That proportion rises to 48% when purchases from clubs lower in the English football pyramid are included. Of the 20 most expensive transfers completed during the window, only six did not involve a move to a Premier League club.

Premier League net spending remained above £1bn despite major sales by English clubs, while Bundesliga and Ligue 1 teams received more in transfer fees than they spent. The BBC also reported that promoted Ipswich Town spent more on incoming players than Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and reigning European champions Paris St-Germain, further illustrating the English top flight's financial reach in this window.
