Portugal beat Northern Ireland 4-0 to seize World Cup play-off advantage
Portugal beat Northern Ireland 4-0 at Inver Park in the first leg of their 2027 Women's World Cup play-off semi-final, leaving the hosts facing a substantial deficit before Tuesday's return in Portimao. BBC Sport reported that Northern Ireland manager Michael McArdle considered the task of turning the tie around effectively beyond his side after the defeat.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors took the lead in the eighth minute through Telma Encarnacao's penalty. According to BBC Sport's match report, debutant Jane McMaster was penalised for handball while trying to prevent Jessica Silva from reaching Andreia Jacinto's cross. Encarnacao converted into the bottom-right corner, giving Portugal an early advantage that they would extend twice more before the interval.
Northern Ireland threatened when Rebecca McKenna narrowly failed to reach Ellie Mason's delivery, but Portugal made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Encarnacao supplied Silva, whose first-time shot hit the crossbar and crossed the line. Five minutes later, Rebecca Holloway diverted Catarina Amado's cross into her own net to leave Northern Ireland three goals behind.
The home side improved after the break. Goalkeeper Jackie Burns denied Silva before Amado received a second yellow card for a foul on Kess Elmore. Mason subsequently forced a save from Ines Pereira, but Portugal increased their lead despite being a player short: Fatima Pinto scored from 30 yards to make it 4-0.
McArdle, who became Northern Ireland manager in March, told BBC Sport there were encouraging aspects to the performance despite the result. His team were missing experienced players including captain Simone Magill, Laura Rafferty and Nadene Caldwell. Alongside McMaster's debut, Elmore and 16-year-old Charlotte Havern earned their first caps as substitutes.
The manager stressed the value of exposing younger players to international competition as part of a longer-term effort to qualify for major tournaments. He said his squad would regroup after the disappointment and use the return match for development as well as continuing their qualification attempt. The second leg therefore remains part of his wider rebuilding work.
Northern Ireland will be without Cora Chambers after her stoppage-time dismissal for pulling Carolina Correia's hair. The eventual winners of the tie are likely to face Iceland in the play-off final, with Iceland also holding a 4-0 first-leg lead over Croatia. Neither semi-final has yet been completed.
