Pollock scores twice as England beat Australia 45-22 at Twickenham
England defeated Australia 45-22 at Twickenham on Sunday, with replacement Henry Pollock scoring twice in a seven-try performance. BBC Sport and The Guardian reported that the hosts led 19-10 at half-time before extending their advantage after the interval. Fin Smith kicked five conversions, while Australia finished with three tries in a match England had taken control of before the break.
Watch the highlights:
Jamie George opened England's scoring from a lineout drive after an earlier potential try by Immanuel Feyi-Waboso had been ruled out for a forward pass in the buildup. Ryan Lonergan put Australia on the board with a penalty, but England continued to create openings. A strong carry from Feyi-Waboso helped set up the attack that ended with Ollie Chessum crossing for the hosts' second try.
Australia then lost Angus Bell to a yellow card for an illegal tackle on Feyi-Waboso, according to The Guardian's match report. Joe Heyes finished another driving maul to move England 19-3 ahead. The visitors reduced that deficit just before half-time when Max Jorgensen intercepted a pass from Jack van Poortvliet and ran away to score. Lonergan's conversion left Australia nine points behind at the interval.
Feyi-Waboso did not return for the second half, and Pollock took over on the wing. England nevertheless added to their lead through Van Poortvliet, who collected a long inside pass from Tommy Freeman to score. The scrum-half's try followed the interception that had allowed Australia back into the contest shortly before the teams went into the changing rooms.
Pollock then scored in the 54th minute and added another try within three minutes, The Guardian reported. His two finishes accounted for half of England's four second-half tries. Australia responded with scores from Filipo Daugunu and Jeremy Williams, but Ben Spencer supplied England's final try after making an interception of his own. The BBC's scoring summary recorded a conversion apiece for Lonergan and Ben Donaldson, alongside Lonergan's penalty.
The result gives England a win ahead of matches against Japan and New Zealand over the next two Saturdays. The Guardian reported that those fixtures could still offer a route into the Nations Championship final on home soil at the end of the month. England's immediate achievement was a seven-try victory, with George, Chessum, Heyes, Van Poortvliet and Spencer joining double scorer Pollock on the scoresheet.
