Police investigate alleged Derby assault after Brydon Carse detention

Derbyshire police are investigating allegations of assault in Derby city centre following the weekend detention of England fast bowler Brydon Carse. The Guardian reported that the investigation remains active, but it is unclear whether Carse had any involvement in the alleged assault. Police said on Wednesday that no arrests had been made and inquiries were continuing.

Carse was filmed in handcuffs outside Molly Malone's Irish Tavern in Derby during the early hours of Sunday. Several Durham teammates were present, including former England captain Ben Stokes. Derbyshire police confirmed on Monday that Carse had briefly been detained on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly before being de-arrested.

According to the Guardian, the footage was recorded after the 31-year-old had been denied re-entry to the venue shortly before its closing time. The newspaper reported that Carse had left the bar after an exchange of words with a member of the public who had spilled a drink on him. Police have not publicly linked those circumstances to the separate assault allegations.

The incident has already affected England's plans for the second Test against Pakistan. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Monday that Carse would not be available for the match. He had been released from the squad following England's first-Test victory at Headingley and subsequently played for Durham against Derbyshire.

Carse is set to remain unavailable for England while the Cricket Regulator considers the matter. The Guardian reported that the regulator's inquiry has not begun while the police investigation is active. Durham nevertheless selected Carse for Thursday's home County Championship fixture against Gloucestershire.

England Test captain Joe Root addressed the episode on Tuesday, expressing concern for Carse's welfare while also making clear his frustration about off-field incidents involving players. Root had recently lifted a midnight curfew imposed by team management, saying players should be treated as adults. For now, the key unresolved point is whether police establish any connection between Carse and the assault allegations; authorities have not alleged such a connection publicly.
