Pogacar Conquers Milano-Sanremo Despite Crash While Silvestri Hospitalized After Terrifying Fall
The Slovenian superstar overcame a dramatic crash to edge Tom Pidcock by mere centimeters, while the womens race was overshadowed by Debora Silvestris serious accident.

Tadej Pogacar captured his first Milano-Sanremo victory in dramatic fashion, overcoming a punishing crash that left him bloodied and bruised before edging Tom Pidcock by mere centimeters at the finish line. The thrilling conclusion to La Classicissima was overshadowed by serious concerns for Italian rider Debora Silvestri, who was hospitalized in stable condition following a horrific crash during the womens race.

The 300-kilometer monument represented one of the few major titles that had eluded Pogacar throughout his illustrious career, and the UAE Team Emirates leader had openly expressed his desperation to claim this particular prize. His chances appeared to evaporate when he was caught in a significant crash approximately 30 kilometers from the finish, an incident that shredded his shorts and left visible scrapes covering his left leg.

For a moment, it is all over because to crash in Imperia just before the most important part of the race is not ideal, reflected Pogacar on his immediate thoughts following the fall. The Slovenian quickly realized, however, that both he and his bicycle had escaped serious damage, allowing him to rejoin the peloton just as the race entered its most decisive phase.

Pogacars remarkable recovery was facilitated by exceptional teamwork from his UAE Emirates colleagues, who sacrificed their own ambitions to pace him back to the front group. Their commitment provided the foundation for what would become one of the most memorable comebacks in recent Milano-Sanremo history, as Pogacar regained contact with the leaders precisely when the famous Cipressa climb began.

The five-time Grand Tour winner demonstrated his characteristic tactical intelligence by positioning himself perfectly for the decisive moves on the penultimate Cipressa climb. When the attacks began, Pogacar responded immediately and then launched his own offensive near the summit, with only defending champion Mathieu van der Poel and British star Tom Pidcock able to match his acceleration.

The leading trio established a 25-second advantage at the top of the Cipressa, though their margin had shrunk to 11 seconds as they approached the final Poggio climb. Pogacar struck again halfway up the decisive ascent, this time dropping van der Poel permanently while Pidcock demonstrated remarkable resilience to maintain contact with the race favorite.

Despite multiple attempts to distance his British rival, Pogacar found Pidcock equal to every acceleration, setting up a thrilling two-man sprint finish that would decide the race. The tension built throughout the technical descent from the Poggio, where both riders displayed exceptional bike-handling skills while calculating their final moves.

Pogacar opened his sprint 200 meters from the line, utilizing his superior positioning and power to edge Pidcock by approximately four centimeters in one of the closest finishes in Milano-Sanremo history. The agonizingly narrow defeat left Pidcock devastated despite recognizing the quality of his performance against cycling greatest talent.

Honestly, I need time to reflect because right now I am pretty disappointed because it hurts to be so close, admitted Pidcock. Tadej, he is the best cyclist ever, so I cannot be disappointed but I cannot help it. It was so close to a monument win.

Wout van Aert, who was also involved in the earlier crash, demonstrated his own remarkable recovery by winning the sprint for third place from the chasing group. The Belgian marveled at Pogacars transformation from crash victim to race winner, noting the impressive nature of his comeback.

The womens race concluded with Lotte Kopecky claiming victory in a five-rider sprint, though the result was overshadowed by serious concern for Silvestri, whose fall over a guardrail during the Cipressa descent required immediate hospitalization. Her team confirmed she remained stable while undergoing further medical evaluation.

Pogacars triumph validates his status as cyclings most versatile champion while adding another prestigious monument to his already impressive palmares.
