Pochettino Sets Wider US Soccer Mission After Contract Extension

Mauricio Pochettino has outlined a broader mission for the United States men's national team after extending his contract with US Soccer in August. The Guardian reported on Monday that the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager will have influence beyond the senior team's results, including youth development, coaching education and collaboration with professional leagues.

Pochettino originally took charge in 2024, ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil. The United States exited that tournament two months ago, but he is now preparing the team for four friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada in late September and early October. His longer-term competitive task is to guide the team toward qualification for the 2030 World Cup.

The coach said he wants to help US Soccer build a lasting legacy and pursue the goal of becoming one of the world's strongest soccer countries. US Soccer is also restructuring and filling new director positions across its men's, women's, senior and youth programs. Pochettino indicated that he is willing to assist in that process while stressing that appointments should serve the federation's future rather than simply reflect his personal preferences.

Pochettino also discussed forward Folarin Balogun, whose proposed move from Monaco to Everton collapsed late in the transfer window. Everton cited a possible fitness concern, while Monaco and Balogun disputed that assessment, according to The Guardian. Pochettino said he intended to contact the 25-year-old after giving him space and described Balogun as an important player for the national team.

On dual-national recruitment, Pochettino confirmed that Augsburg center-back Noahkai Banks will not join the coming camp while he considers his international future. The 19-year-old German-American has not made a decision. Pochettino said US Soccer remains in contact with eligible dual nationals, emphasizing that a player's commitment and sporting merit would both matter before a call-up.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are another priority. Pochettino said his staff is working with United States under-23 coach Steve Cherundolo and may use the approaching international window to assess younger players who could feature at the Games. He framed a gold-medal challenge on home soil as an objective for the federation while calling for young players and their clubs to place greater value on youth national-team opportunities.
