Pochettino Takes Broader USMNT Role With 2030 and LA 2028 in Focus

Mauricio Pochettino is beginning an expanded assignment with US Soccer after extending his contract in August, with his responsibilities now reaching beyond the senior men's national team. The Guardian reported that the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager will have greater input into youth development, coaching education and collaboration with professional leagues as the federation plans its next cycle.

The United States will return to action with four friendlies in late September and early October against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada. Those matches begin the competitive reset following the team's exit from the 2026 World Cup and form part of a longer project that includes qualification for the 2030 tournament.

Pochettino said the wider remit gives him an opportunity to contribute to a lasting structure, not only senior-team results. US Soccer is also restructuring and searching for a sporting director. The coach indicated that he is willing to assist with that process while stressing that the appointment cannot simply be his preferred choice.

Planning for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is another priority. Pochettino's staff is working with under-23 coach Steve Cherundolo, and the senior coach said the coming international window could be used to assess younger players who may feature at the Games. He described contending for the gold medal on home soil as an objective for the federation and country.

Pochettino also addressed Folarin Balogun after the Monaco forward's proposed move to Everton collapsed late in the transfer window. Everton cited a potential fitness issue, which Monaco and Balogun disputed. Pochettino said he had given the 25-year-old space after the episode but planned to contact him, adding that Balogun remains an important player following his role at the World Cup.

Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks will not join the next US camp while he remains undecided between the United States and Germany. The 19-year-old has said he expects to decide by the next international break or the one after it. Pochettino said US Soccer remains in contact with eligible dual-national players, but made clear that selection would depend on both commitment and merit.
