Pietersen: Cook Has No Idea What IPL is Like - 'Bethell Should Ignore Him'
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has launched a scathing attack on ex-captain Alastair Cook's advice to young England stars about the Indian Premier League, telling promising talent like Jacob Bethell to disregard Cook's warnings about franchise cricket.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has launched a scathing attack on ex-captain Alastair Cook's advice to young England stars about the Indian Premier League, telling promising talent like Jacob Bethell to disregard Cook's warnings about franchise cricket.

Watch the highlights:

Pietersen, speaking exclusively to tournaments.com, dismissed Cook's recent comments suggesting young English players should be cautious about prioritizing IPL deals over county cricket and England central contracts. Cook, who scored over 12,000 Test runs for England, had warned that the T20 circus could distract emerging talents from developing their games properly.

"Cook has absolutely no idea what the IPL is actually like," Pietersen said. "He's been out of the game for years and is sitting in a commentary box. The IPL is the greatest cricket tournament on the planet. The pressure, the quality of opposition, the packed stadiums - it's an education that county cricket simply cannot provide."

The South African-born batsman, who participated in the IPL during his prime years, believes players like Bethell - who has been linked with potential IPL contracts - should embrace the opportunity rather than heed advice from those who never experienced it firsthand.

"Jacob Bethell should ignore him completely. If you get an IPL contract, you go. You learn from the best players in the world, you play in front of 80,000 people, and you develop skills that will make you a better all-format player," Pietersen added. "Cook's generation didn't have these opportunities, so how can he advise on something he's never experienced?"

The controversy comes as several England white-ball specialists face decisions about balancing international duties with lucrative franchise opportunities. The ECB has traditionally taken a hard line on players prioritizing T20 leagues over national service, but Pietersen believes the landscape has shifted dramatically.

"The world has changed. Players can earn more in one IPL season than they would in three years of county cricket. That's not being disloyal to England - that's being smart about your career and your family's future," Pietersen concluded.
