Phil Mickelson to Miss Masters Tournament Due to Family Health Crisis
The three-time Masters champion will take an extended break from professional golf to focus on a personal family health matter.

Phil Mickelson has announced he will skip the upcoming Masters Tournament and take an extended hiatus from professional golf to address a serious family health situation. The decision marks another significant absence for the three-time Augusta National champion, who has only missed the prestigious event three times since his debut in 1991.

The 55-year-old American made his announcement through social media, expressing deep regret about missing golf's first major championship of the year. "Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter," Mickelson wrote on X.

Mickelson emphasized his profound respect for Augusta National Golf Club and the tournament's special place in the golf calendar. "I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year," he continued. "I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching."

This absence creates a historic void at Augusta National, as it represents the first time since 1994 that neither Mickelson nor Tiger Woods will compete in the Masters. Woods recently withdrew from consideration due to his ongoing legal issues, leaving the tournament without two of its most celebrated champions.

The family health matter that prompted Mickelson's withdrawal is not a new development. He previously cited the same issue when announcing his absence from the opening four events of the 2026 LIV Golf season, including tournaments in Riyadh, Adelaide, Hong Kong, and Singapore. His initial announcement came on February 1st, when he first revealed the family health concern that would impact his competitive schedule.

Mickelson did make a brief return to competition last month at the LIV Golf event in Steyn City, South Africa, where he finished in a tie for 48th place. However, uncertainty surrounded whether he would be ready for the Masters, and his withdrawal confirms that family priorities take precedence over his competitive commitments.

The absence represents a significant moment for Mickelson, whose relationship with Augusta National has defined much of his professional legacy. He captured Masters victories in 2004, 2006, and 2010, establishing himself among the tournament's most successful competitors. Only Jack Nicklaus with six victories, Tiger Woods with five, and Arnold Palmer with four have claimed more Masters titles than Mickelson's three green jackets.

Mickelson's Masters history includes both triumph and heartbreak, with his dramatic playoff victory over Ernie Els in 2004 representing one of the tournament's most memorable moments. His emotional celebration after finally capturing his first major championship at age 33 remains iconic in golf history.

Last year's Masters proved challenging for Mickelson, as he missed the cut and failed to advance to weekend competition. The struggle reflected his ongoing adjustment to the LIV Golf format and the disruption to his traditional preparation routine.

Beyond his Masters success, Mickelson has accumulated six major championships throughout his career, including two US PGA Championship victories and a memorable triumph at the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield. His major championship collection places him among golf's elite performers.

The 2022 season marked Mickelson's previous Masters absence, which resulted from controversial comments about the then-proposed LIV Golf project and his criticisms of the PGA Tour. That absence came during a turbulent period in professional golf as the sport navigated the emergence of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.

As Mickelson focuses on his family's health needs, the golf world will await news of his eventual return to competition. His extended absence creates uncertainty about his competitive future while highlighting the personal challenges that often remain hidden behind professional athletics.
