Peterborough defeat leaves Leicester 17th as Martin faces supporter anger
Leicester City were left 17th in League One after eight matches following a home defeat by Peterborough United, with manager Russell Martin accepting responsibility amid calls from supporters for his dismissal. BBC Sport reported that Saturday's loss at King Power Stadium was Leicester's third home defeat of the league campaign, continuing a difficult start after successive relegations.
Watch the highlights:
Peterborough took control before half-time. Owura Edwards opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Harry Leonard added a second and a Warren O'Hora own goal gave the visitors a three-goal advantage at the interval. Emil Riis scored for Leicester in the 68th minute, by which point some home supporters had already left. The BBC reported that Leicester needed 20 attempts on goal before finding the net.
The victory came just over a week after former Leicester captain Robbie Savage took charge of Peterborough. His team had gone six league matches without a win before visiting King Power Stadium. Leicester, meanwhile, returned to action following an extended three-week international break that had given Martin additional time to work with his reshaped squad.
Before kick-off, Leicester sporting director James McCarron had publicly backed Martin in an interview with BBC Radio Leicester. He said the club had appointed the manager to establish a game based on controlling possession and territory, supported by courage and intensity. McCarron also pointed to 30 summer transfers as a reason the team needed time to settle and produce consistent performances.
After the match, Martin accepted the crowd's anger and said responsibility rested with him as the person in charge of the team. He nevertheless disputed the idea that replacing a manager offered an immediate solution. Martin said he had wanted his players to respond more aggressively when under pressure and criticised their ability to stay together during difficult passages of the game.
Midfielder John Lundstram described anxiety and nervousness among the players, telling BBC Radio Leicester that some were retreating into themselves under the pressure surrounding the club. He said the squad was capable of better performances. Martin has won four of his first 12 matches in charge across all competitions, according to the BBC's report.
