Patterson-White's Unbeaten 76 Revives Nottinghamshire at The Oval
Liam Patterson-White's unbeaten 76 carried Nottinghamshire to 184 after Surrey's pace attack had threatened to dismiss the County Championship leaders cheaply on a rain-affected opening day at The Oval. Surrey closed on 13-1 in reply, leaving the Division One match finely placed after 11 wickets fell.
Watch the highlights:
According to a report from the ECB Reporters' Network published by BBC Sport, Surrey captain Rory Burns chose to bowl on a well-grassed pitch. The decision quickly paid off as Nottinghamshire slipped to 14-3 and then 41-5. Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater departed inside three overs, while Matt Fisher removed Joe Clarke during an incisive new-ball spell. Jack Haynes made 20 before becoming Tom Lawes' second wicket.
Nottinghamshire were 70-6 when Patterson-White joined Kyle Verreynne. Batting at number eight, Patterson-White rebuilt the innings while still looking to score, eventually facing 112 deliveries and hitting 13 fours. Verreynne contributed 22 before Lawes dismissed him, and Nottinghamshire later fell to 104-8 when Olly Stone was caught off Dan Worrall.
Brett Hutton then helped Patterson-White add 56 across the tea interval, making 19 before Lawes removed him. Last batter Dillon Pennington scored nine, with the final two wickets adding 80 runs in total. Lawes completed figures of 5-45, while Worrall took 2-41 and Fisher finished with 2-43. Patterson-White remained unbeaten when the innings ended.
Stone gave Nottinghamshire an immediate breakthrough with the ball by having Dom Sibley caught behind for a second-ball duck. Surrey reached the close without another loss, ending the day 171 runs behind with nine first-innings wickets available. The hosts also made a replacement after Ryan Patel injured a finger while attempting a catch during Nottinghamshire's innings; Josh Blake entered the team as his substitute.
Rain repeatedly interrupted the day, with a heavy shower ending the morning session after 86 minutes and another delay following the early lunch. The championship position adds weight to the contest: Nottinghamshire began the six-match run-in as Division One leaders, while seventh-placed Surrey were only 25 points behind. Patterson-White's recovery ensured the visitors retained a foothold after Surrey had dominated the opening exchanges.
