Pato consortium completes Northampton takeover as club confirms debt-free status
Northampton Town's takeover by Sports Alpha Capital, a consortium that includes former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato, has been completed, BBC Sport reported on 30 September. The League Two club said the transaction would leave it debt-free, with new co-chairmen taking over from Kelvin Thomas after more than a decade in the role.
Watch the highlights:
The ownership arrangement gives Sports Alpha Capital a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the company that holds the majority of shares in the football club. Existing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Thomas will retain the remaining 30% collectively. The Independent Football Regulator and English Football League approved the proposed deal earlier in September.
The club's statement on its debt position follows the announcement in April 2026 of a pre-tax loss of just under £3m. Thomas, who led the takeover when Northampton faced a winding-up petition in 2015, will remain a shareholder and director alongside Bower and Le Quesne despite relinquishing the chairmanship.
Sports Alpha Capital's Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain will become co-chairmen, while Pato is set to join the board as a director. Chief executive James Whiting and supporters' representative Tom Cliffe will stay on the board. Jim Rosenthal and Mike Wailing will leave their board positions and become associate directors as part of the changes.
In a joint statement reported by the BBC, Xavier and Chamberlain described the acquisition as a long-term commitment and said their ambitions needed to be matched by sustainable management. They pledged to work with supporters, staff, the Community Trust and local stakeholders. Further details of their plans for the club are still to be announced.
Pato was named among the consortium's investors alongside London-based investment management firm Gemcorp Capital. He and fellow investors attended Northampton's 1-0 victory over Newport County on 5 September. The 37-year-old retired from playing last year after a career that included 63 goals in 150 appearances for AC Milan and the 2010-11 Serie A title.
The ownership change comes with Northampton 22nd in League Two, two points above the bottom. They were relegated after finishing last in League One the previous season and appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May. Thirteen players arrived during the summer transfer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City.
