Pato-Backed Consortium Clears Reviews for Northampton Investment
A consortium that includes former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato has received regulatory approval for a proposed investment in Northampton Town. The transaction is not yet complete, and the size of the planned stake has not been disclosed.

A consortium whose investors include former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato has cleared regulatory reviews for a proposed shareholding acquisition in Northampton Town, the League Two club has announced. BBC Sport reported that both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League approved the planned investment by Sports Alpha Capital.

Watch the highlights:

The approval is a significant step, but it does not mean the transaction has been completed. Northampton said the parties are now working through the remaining documentation and finalising the investment. The club has not disclosed the size of the stake, and said details of the structure and principal investors will be released when the deal is complete.

Sports Alpha Capital identifies Pato as an investor alongside Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm. The group had previously held discussions over a possible takeover of Colchester United earlier in 2026, but withdrew after initial talks. Northampton first confirmed in April that it was speaking to what it described as a well-funded investment group.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said the review process examined the proposed investment, ownership structure, financial sustainability, and the suitability and financial standing of those involved. He described the approvals as an important milestone and said several members of the consortium had already visited Northampton, spent time at the club and attended matches.

The proposed capital arrives at a difficult point for Northampton. The Cobblers were relegated after finishing bottom of League One last season and have yet to record a win in the 2026-27 campaign. In April, the club reported a pre-tax loss of just under £3 million. BBC Sport said Thomas had previously stated that the investment would leave Northampton debt-free.

Northampton appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May and added 13 players during the summer transfer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City. Pato, 37, retired from playing in 2025 after a career that included 63 goals in 150 appearances for AC Milan and the 2010-11 Serie A title. For now, the confirmed development is regulatory clearance; the investment’s final terms remain pending completion.
