Parkinson Takes Six as Durham Rout Northamptonshire by 153 Runs
Durham strengthened their position at the top of the County Championship's Division Two with a 153-run victory over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. BBC Sport reports that the hosts were dismissed for just 50 while chasing 204 on the final morning, with Durham left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson taking 6-20.
Watch the highlights:
What happened at Northampton was a rapid final-day collapse. Northamptonshire lost all 10 wickets in 22.2 overs, bringing the match to an end with more than two sessions still available. Their total was their lowest against Durham, according to the BBC report, and no home batter reached double figures; Ben Kimber top-scored with eight.
Parkinson did the bulk of the damage, finding sharp turn at times and capitalising when Northamptonshire's batters tried to attack his left-arm spin. His six wickets came at a cost of only 20 runs. BBC Sport described the performance as the decisive contribution in a chase that never developed momentum.
Matthew Potts supported Parkinson by sustaining pressure with pace from the other end. Potts took 2-13 from seven overs, while Ben Stokes returned 2-9 to account for the remaining wickets. The three Durham bowlers needed no other wicket-taker as Northamptonshire's pursuit ended far short of its target.
Earlier, Northamptonshire leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had closed Durham's second innings by taking the final three wickets for 15 runs. Chahal finished with 5-84 as Durham were bowled out for 261, following their first-innings 205. Alex Lees made 80 in the second innings. Northamptonshire had scored 263 first time around, giving them a 58-run lead before Durham recovered to set the final target.
Why it matters for the Division Two promotion race is reflected in the points return. Durham collected 19 points from the victory and Northamptonshire took four. With three matches remaining, the result consolidated Durham's position as division leaders while delivering a heavy defeat to one of their promotion rivals.
