Papers: Three-man shortlist emerges for Chelsea job

Chelsea have narrowed their managerial search to three candidates as the club continues its overhaul following a turbulent season that has seen multiple managerial changes at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports emerging from multiple British publications, the Blues' hierarchy has identified Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, Brentford's Thomas Frank, and former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as the primary targets to succeed the departing head coach. The London club has been searching for stability in the managerial department since Todd Boehly's consortium took ownership in 2022.

Amorim has emerged as the front-runner after guiding Sporting to successive Primeira Liga titles and developing one of Europe's most exciting young teams. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach has been linked with multiple Premier League clubs throughout the season, but Chelsea's substantial financial resources and Champions League football may give them the edge.

Thomas Frank has impressed during his tenure at Brentford, transforming the Bees into a competitive Premier League side capable of challenging for European qualification. The Danish coach's tactical flexibility and ability to develop players have caught the attention of several top clubs seeking proven Premier League experience.

De Zerbi, who departed Brighton last season, has been working in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk but has maintained a strong reputation in English football following his impressive spell on the south coast. His innovative coaching philosophy and tactical acumen have attracted interest from across Europe.

Chelsea have spent over £1 billion on new signings since Boehly's takeover but currently sit outside the European qualification places. The club's hierarchy is determined to appoint a manager who can maximize the substantial investment made in the squad while implementing a clear tactical identity.

"We're looking for someone who can build on what we've created," a club source indicated. "The new manager needs to understand our vision and have the ability to develop young talent while competing for major honors immediately."

An announcement is expected before the end of the season, with Chelsea eager to provide their new manager with adequate time to prepare for the upcoming campaign. The successful candidate will inherit a squad featuring several internationals including Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and Christopher Nkunku.
