Oxford Brookes Racing: The University Forging Formula One's Future Engineers
With alumni in every F1 team, Oxford Brookes University's Formula Student program has become the premier breeding ground for motorsport engineering talent.

In the heart of England's motorsport valley, over 100 students at Oxford Brookes University are crafting the next generation of racing technology. Their mission extends far beyond academic achievement – they're building careers that will shape Formula One's future.

Oxford Brookes Racing represents the pinnacle of student motorsport engineering in the United Kingdom. The program has earned more design awards than any other British university and consistently dominates international Formula Student competitions. More impressively, graduates from this prestigious program now work within every Formula One team on the grid.

"A lot of the coverage on TV is based around the drivers, but not really the actual engineers," explains Thomas Cawdery, a team manager and third-year motorsports technology student. "This is what you don't see in Formula One. The engineers who make it happen."

The complexity of their student-built machines rivals professional racing cars. While safety regulations limit their power output compared to Formula One vehicles, the engineering challenges remain equally sophisticated. In some areas, student teams actually surpass F1 capabilities – their cars can perform torque vectoring, using individual motors for each wheel to enhance cornering performance and traction control.

What sets Oxford Brookes apart isn't just technical excellence but also progressive team dynamics. The program boasts significantly better gender representation than professional motorsport, where women typically comprise only ten percent of engineering staff. Emma Deery, a first-year mechanical engineering student, appreciates this inclusive environment.

"In the industry, a lot of women find themselves the only woman on their team," Deery notes. "Here it's different. We have a lot more women and a lot of women in leadership roles. It's really encouraging."

The program's location provides unmatched advantages for aspiring motorsport professionals. Situated approximately one hour from major Formula One headquarters including Red Bull, McLaren, Alpine, Mercedes-AMG, and Aston Martin, students enjoy unprecedented access to industry connections and testing facilities. Many teams utilize lunch breaks for quick trips to Silverstone Circuit, the legendary home of British motorsport.

This geographical advantage extends beyond convenience. The area's concentration of parts suppliers serves both student teams and Formula One operations, creating natural networking opportunities and real-world industry exposure.

Ross Brawn, the legendary former Formula One team principal, has recognized the program's significance: "There are two really innovative forms of motorsport left. One of them is Formula One and the other one is Formula Student."

Robin Bailes, currently an engineer at Mercedes and former Oxford Brookes competitor, emphasizes the program's recruitment value: "What some teams create in terms of engineering is very high level. And generally speaking, Formula Student has very open rules, so innovation comes through from students that you might not see in traditional motorsport."

The international scope of Formula Student competition continues expanding, with this year's preliminary team list including 103 teams representing 27 countries. This global participation ensures that Oxford Brookes students compete against the world's brightest engineering minds.

Sébastien Cavedon, the team's operations manager who relocated from Switzerland specifically for this opportunity, describes the transformative experience: "Honestly, being from a country where motorsport isn't that big of a deal, then coming here where motorsports is huge... it's really life changing."

As the team prepares for this summer's competition at Silverstone, they carry the weight of expectation that comes with their prestigious reputation. Success at Formula Student has become the gateway to Formula One careers, where engineering positions can attract over 10,000 applicants.

For these students, every component they craft and every simulation they run represents more than academic exercise – it's preparation for careers at motorsport's highest level.
