Owono expresses grief as Tenerife mourn De Miguel and weekend matches are postponed
FC Andorra released Jesus Owono’s statement following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel. Tenerife announced six days of mourning, while both clubs’ weekend fixtures were postponed.

FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has issued a statement expressing his grief following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel after their collision in a Spanish second division match on Monday. BBC Sport reported that Andorra released the statement on Wednesday, with the 25-year-old saying he was struggling to process what had happened.

Watch the highlights:

Owono said his thoughts were with De Miguel, his family and those close to him. He acknowledged that questions would need to be addressed and said he would respond respectfully, while explaining that his immediate focus remained on the loss and the pain surrounding it. De Miguel, 30, was a father of one and had joined Tenerife in summer 2025.

The match was level at 2-2, seven minutes into stoppage time, when Owono left his goal to clear a long ball near the centre circle. According to the BBC's account, his knee appeared to strike De Miguel. Medical staff treated the forward on the pitch before an ambulance took him to hospital. Owono was sent off and the game was abandoned.

Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz publicly supported his teammate on Wednesday, saying Owono was devastated and would not intentionally harm another player. Andorra's players observed a minute's silence before a voluntary training session that day, which Owono did not attend. The Guardian also reported that the club was making psychological support available to anyone who needed it following De Miguel's death.

Support for Owono has also come from Equatorial Guinea's football federation. Its president, Venancio Tomas Micha, offered the goalkeeper personal and professional backing in a statement on Tuesday. Owono has played 47 times for the national team. Meanwhile, mourners gathered at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez on Tuesday, leaving flowers and lighting candles beneath an image of De Miguel.

Tenerife announced six official days of mourning and the suspension of club activities during that period. Players, staff and officials will attend De Miguel's funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo, and the stadium will open on Saturday evening for supporters to pay their respects. His family has requested privacy. Tenerife's weekend match against Granada and Andorra's fixture against Mallorca have both been postponed.
