O'Sullivan, Zhao and Williams exit Shenzhen Open on opening day

Ronnie O'Sullivan, Zhao Xintong and Mark Williams were all eliminated on the opening day of the Shenzhen Open, according to BBC Sport. Monday's second-round results removed the seven-time world champion, the current world number one and the defending tournament champion, while Judd Trump secured his place in the last 16.

O'Sullivan lost 5-2 to China's Jiang Jun, ranked 64th in the world. Jiang built a two-frame lead before O'Sullivan responded with breaks of 92 and 52 to draw level. That recovery did not produce a turnaround: Jiang won the next three frames and completed the victory with a century break of 108. His next opponent is England's Zak Surety.

Zhao's match went to the deciding frame, with Scotland's Scott Donaldson overcoming a 3-2 deficit to beat the 2025 world champion. Donaldson, who sits 65 places below Zhao in the rankings, made breaks of 77, 105, 50 and 62 during the contest. He will face China's Pang Junxu in the third round after coming through the close encounter.

Williams also went out in a decider, losing 5-4 to China's Fan Zhengyi. The Welshman's defence of the title ended after he committed a foul on the final pink. His defeat completed a trio of prominent exits, with both Williams and Zhao losing matches that required the full nine frames, unlike O'Sullivan's seven-frame contest.

Trump had a more straightforward passage, beating China's Huang Jiahao 5-0. His scheduled third-round opponent, Anthony McGill, withdrew on medical grounds, meaning Trump moves into the last 16. Another withdrawal saw Belgium's Ben Mertens progress after Northern Ireland's Mark Allen pulled out for personal reasons.

Elsewhere in the second round, Australia's Neil Robertson defeated China's Liu Hongyu 5-2. England's Chris Wakelin beat Welshman Liam Davies 5-3, while China's Si Jiahui conceded just one frame in a 5-1 victory over England's Oliver Lines.

Monday's programme also included first-round matches. Wales' Jamie Clarke, England's Andrew Higginson and Sam Craigie, and Hong Kong's Marco Fu all advanced from those encounters, BBC Sport reported.
