O'Sullivan Thumps Table in Frustration as Higgins Mounts Dramatic Fightback at Crucible
Ronnie O'Sullivan shows rare emotion at the World Snooker Championship as Mark Higgins stages a spirited comeback after being dominated early in their semifinal clash.

Ronnie O'Sullivan produced a memorable moment of theatrical frustration during his World Snooker Championship semifinal against Mark Higgins, thumping the table in visible irritation as the Irishman began mounting a fightback at the Crucible Theatre on Sunday.

The seven-time world champion had appeared en route to another dominant victory when he opened up a commanding four-frame lead after the first session of their best-of-33 frames clash. However, Higgins showed the fighting spirit that has defined his career, winning three consecutive frames in response to O'Sullivan's earlier bursts of quality.

The moment that captured headlines came when O'Sullivan, typically cool under pressure, reacted with uncharacteristic passion after a missed pot. Witnesses at the Crucible reported the 49-year-old slamming his palm against the baize surface, drawing reaction from the capacity crowd.

"I've never seen him like that before," said one spectator. "He was completely in control and then suddenly you could see the frustration boiling over."

O'Sullivan, who is pursuing an unprecedented eighth world title, had looked sharp in the morning session, compiling breaks of 127, 89, and 74 as he established his advantage. But Higgins, a four-time world champion himself, refused to capitulate.

The Englishman won the final frame of the afternoon with a break of 76, reducing the deficit to 7-5 heading into the evening session. "Mark's not going away," O'Sullivan acknowledged to reporters. "He's been in this position so many times. I need to keep my focus if I want to get over the line."

The match continues into Sunday evening, with Higgins needing to win 14 of the remaining 19 frames to reach the final.
